Something So Bad, Even Trump Doesn't Want His Name on It

Donald Trump is clearly a big believer in getting his name in the media, on a label or on the side of a building, even if he gets tons of criticism in the process. So it's kind of unbelievable that we've actually stumbled on something that even he doesn't want to attach himself to. Trump has filed a lawsuit to get his name off of the Trump Taj Mahal and the Trump Plaza, two Atlantic City hotel/casinos that he built back in the 80s and 90s. In 2009, he got rid of his stake in the companies and licensed the use of his name to Trump Entertainment Resorts. Now his lawsuit says the casinos have fallen into an "utter state of disrepair" and he doesn't want them to bear his name any longer. Ha! Trump will go on and on in the most idiotic ways to get his name on a reporter's lips, but he still has a sense of the importance of the perception of quality. Even if his words are rubbish, he knows that the goods have to have a little substance behind them if he's going to be given the license to prattle on endlessly. Up to this point, Trump has prefaced the credibility of his statements with the level of business that he claims to do. Let's ignore the fact that he's filed for bankruptcy numerous times while still talking up his business savvy. That he's on the wrong side of history with his ignorant birther statements. When he's got the mike, he'll talk about how luxurious his golf properties are, how thirst quenching his bottled water is, how stylish his clothing line is. Atlantic City, on the other hand, has run on some hard times to say the least. Revel Resort & Casino, the property that was supposed to bring the famous boardwalk back to its glory days, is bankrupt and looking for a buyer. (*Update, August 12: Revel is closing next month after two years.) The city has earned a reputation for crime that goes beyond Boardwalk Empire. And there are a number of other casinos that might not make it, including Trump Plaza. "Annual revenue for the city's casinos fell 6.2% last year to $2.9 billion," says CNNMoney. "The Trump name ... has become synonymous with the highest levels of quality, luxury, prestige and success," says the lawsuit. He's currently working on hotels in Washington DC and New York City that are in tony locations. (*Update, August 12: Trump is building a new tower in Mumbai as well.) He doesn't want to be associated with something that is seen as falling apart. Of all the things that you can accuse Donald Trump of being, witless about the ways of building a reputation isn't one of them. He sees clearly that these properties are a stain on his brand.
