In a packed ballroom at the Grand Hyatt above New York’s Grand Central Station, PRWeek handed out its annual awards to firms including Ketchum, FleishmanHillard and Beekeeper Group.
Starting with a video that repeatedly reminded us that we were at the “Oscars for the PR industry,” the event launched into perhaps its most poignant award. Communicator of the Year was given to Edie Windsor, whose courage and tenacity led to the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act. Though she couldn’t be there, there was someone in attendance to accept the award on her behalf. In a statement, Windsor thanked the magazine for the honor, but also thanked the industry — “the real communicators,” she called them — for carrying her message far and wide.
In addition to Windsor, the Human Rights Campaign also took home an award for Best Use of Social Media/Digital. The award recognized the group’s efforts to realize its mission of equality for the LGBTQ community.
The remaining awards were handed out to some familiar names as well as some relative newcomers.
Among the big awards: Ketchum and P&G/Gillette took home the Campaign of the Year; Olson Engage took both Agency of the Year and the Midsize Agency of the Year awards; FleishmanHillard took home prizes for Large Agency of the Year, PR Professional of the Year (for CEO Dave Senay, who wasn’t able to attend to accept his award), and for Cause-Related Campaign (with AT&T); and Boutique Agency of the Year went to Beekeeper Group. Aside from that, the event kept the wine flowing and had tables of desserts to choose from after the event was over, so we felt like a winner as well. Thanks to Carmichael Lynch Spong for hosting us and congratulations to all the winners!
