Universal Sports has signed a deal with the World Triathlon Corporation to air the Ford Ironman World Championship and other key events through 2013. The cable channel joins NBC as the exclusive broadcasters of more than a dozen WTC events which includes the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3.
Universal Sports, which airs Olympic-related and lifestyle sports programs, was created via a partnership between NBC Sports and InterMedia Partners. It is currently available in 45 million homes.
“Ironman’s partnership with Universal Sports is a perfect fit. Their experience and excellent coverage of all Olympic disciplines will allow us to further reach our core audience,” said Peter Henning, Ironman senior vice president of television, in a statement. NBC Sports has been broadcasting Ironman competitions since 1991 and has earned more than 50 Emmy nominations for its coverage.
Under the terms of the deal, Universal Sports will have the rights stream the competitions at UniversalSports.com and Ironman.com.
