What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
I start with either The New York Times or New York Post websites, then I check out The Daily Beast, SportsGrid, maybe head over to BuzzFeed. I make laps all day. I’ll add in sites specific to news we’re covering, such as local newspaper sites for local stories. I really need to stay abreast of all the news.
What do you read or watch or listen to at the breakfast table?
I wish I had a breakfast table. In the morning I usually have my iPhone open to one app; multiple computers are going. I consume so much media all day. I have to check out what’s on TV at the same time. I overload.
What occupies your mind in the car, on the subway, train or bus?
I have like 30 sites or apps I’m looking at, and a lot of that is sports. There’s an app I like called theScore. I’m a big Nets fan—I’m actually going to the game tonight. And there’s an Ole Miss sports app I love. I went to school there, and we’re having a hell of a year in every sport.
Are you a TV junkie or on an airtime-restricted diet?
I don’t watch a lot of TV. I’m not married to it. I usually have Jon Stewart and Colbert on our DVR.
Before bed, do you bite into a novel, graze on Twitter or fast until morning?
At bedtime, I do another lap. I make sure nothing blew up that I need to stay up for. I sleep with my Samsung Galaxy in the bed. They have a tendency to call me…It goes with the territory.
How much Fox News do you actually watch?
I keep Megyn [Kelly’s] show [America Live] on in the couple of hours before I go to work, and I usually have it on at some point in the mornings.
Do you read about yourself on the Web?
I read some of it. One thing about that is that you get stuff you like and don’t like. I keep up with what’s being said in the industry more so, things like Mediaite. There is this one thing Politico does called the Daily Shep—it’s usually me saying something stupid. I get a kick out of it. You can’t do this for 25 years without a pretty thick skin.
Do you have a favorite app?
Well, there are lots of apps for news that I use. I’m on YouTube a lot. I spend a lot of time on Delta and JetBlue’s apps. I love Peapod for groceries, Open Table, Seamless.
Which is more nutritious, print or the Web?
I like the Web for getting bits of info, but the Times has so much that is harder to find on the Web. I miss getting 12 papers…In some ways, I’m still a print guy.
With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?
I’m eating a lot of fat—if media were food, I would be obese. Sometimes on vacation I’ll put it down, but I’m always on call. I think it’s a violation if I stop.
