IAC Launches The Writers Network

Freelance writers now have yet another means of making 15 bucks.

According to Adage.com, IAC's Pronto group has rolled out a new venture called The Writers Network, which on its Web site promises visitors that they can “build a career” by taking on fixed rate article assignments. They include topics like "Formal Dinner Party Napkin Folding Ideas" ($15) and "Star Wars Birthday Party" ($22).

IAC appears to be moving into the content mill space pioneered by the likes of Demand Media and Yahoo’s Associated Content, both of which employ thousands of freelancers who churn out enterprise articles—often of the "how-to" variety, and almost always Google search-friendly.

The content farm space has panicked many professional journalists, while drawing the ire of some mainstream publishers. Yet, as these firms have proven to draw big, mainstream audiences, several major media companies have bestowed legitimacy on upstarts. For example, USA Today syndicates travel stories from Demand, while recently, Examiner.com struck a deal with Reuters.

Clearly, IAC sees room for more players, and plenty of willing freelancers. According to Adage.com, The Writers Network is taking a slightly different publishing approach. Instead of focusing solely on producing search-geared stories, articles penned for The Writers Network will be used to populate new IAC sites, such as HomeandGardenIdeas.com.
