Comcast Expands Spanish-Language Offerings

Comcast has added a slew of Spanish-language entertainment channels to its lineup in Northern California. In a move timed with customer upgrades from analog to digital, the cable operator is launching 80 new networks in the market Aug. 11.

Among them are regional Mexican music channels Bandamax and TeleRitmo (the latter available on cable in California for the first time), entertainment channel Multimedios, and multigenre music channels Ritmoson Latino and Telehit. The 13 new Spanish-language channels will be available on Comcast in more than two dozen Bay Area communities.

Multimedios TV and TeleRitmo, which originate their broadcasts in Monterrey, Mexico, have been picking up cable carriage in the U.S. since last fall. TuTV, a joint venture between Univision and Televisa, struck a deal with Comcast in May for nationwide distribution, beginning with Comcast subscribers in Boston and Chicago. TuTV's offerings include Telehit, Ritmoson Latino and Bandamax, as well as two movie channels.
