Yahoo Launching Digital Magazines, Starting With Food

New daily mobile news product using Summly tech also in hopper

Yahoo is getting into the magazine business.

During a keynote presentation at the Consumer Electronics CEO Marissa Mayer announced several new products, including a planned line of digital magazines, starting with Yahoo Food. A similar product is in the works for Yahoo Tech, which is being helmed by former New York Times columnist David Pogue.

Mayer also used her CES keynote to unveil Yahoo News Digest, a twice daily mobile news product that aggregates and synthesizes news from across the Web. Yahoo News Digest incorporates technology from the mobile startup Summly, which it acquired last year.

"We've all had that experience with articles that are TLDR," said Mayer. "Too long, didn't read." The idea behind Digest, which includes some gamification elements, is to help mobile users become better informed in short bursts of time.

Mayer also annoucned that Yahoo has acquired Aviate, a company that helps users organize apps on their mobile devices.

Lastly, Mayer used the CES platform to reveal a major overhaul of its ads business, including plans to take on Google, AOL and others in the battle to control the ad tech space.
