Mobile devices are fast becoming the preferred way for people to keep up on the news, but a new survey of consumers shows big usage differences by gender, app type and device. Men were much more likely than women to download news apps for the smartphone, while women often were more likely to download those for tablets.
Regardless of device, niche news apps were the type most likely to be downloaded, followed by newspaper and TV news apps. And smartphones were the preferred device for frequent newspaper app readers, while tablets were the device of choice for frequent users of TV news apps. The Reynolds Journalism Institute and Digital Publishing Alliance surveyed 1,134 adults in Q1 2013 for the report.
