Microsoft Cans Bing Cashback Program

It seems as though Microsoft can’t even pay people to use its search engine.

The company announced on Friday (June 4) that it will discontinue its cashback program—which provides users with Microsoft-funded discounts  when they make purchases via retailers discovered through Microsoft’s search product—as of July 30. Executives at Microsoft said that while cashback had attracted thousands of retail partners, users never really took to the concept in large numbers.

“We had over a thousand merchant partners delivering great offers to customers and seeing great ROI on their campaigns, and we were taking some of the advertising revenue and giving it back to customers,” wrote Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s svp, Online Audience Business Group.
