'Twas the year of bacon-scented alarms and tweeting mittens

It's been quite a year for brands in social media, highlighted by the World Cup instead of the Super Bowl for a change as Nike, Beats by Dre and McDonald's scored goals aplenty last summer.

That said, Oscar Mayer (bacon-scented alarm app), JCPenney (#tweetingwithmittens) Under Armour (Misty Copeland video) and others created a ton of buzz during different junctures on the calendar.

Technology vendor Unmetric pulled data for some of 2014's more memorable digital efforts and constructed a timeline/infographic around the stats.
