On April 30, California lawmakers shot down legislation that would have amounted to a de facto ban on digital billboards in the state. The bill, AB 109, had been sponsored by California assemblyman Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles).
“Lawmakers heard all the arguments and voted against a draconian bill which would have hurt the economy, stifled innovation, and denied communities powerful communication tools,” said Outdoor Advertising Association of America president and CEO Nancy Fletcher.
The OAAA was joined by the Motion Picture Association of America, the California Travel Industry Association and the California Chamber of Commerce in opposing the bill.
Digital billboards are allowed under federal guidelines and there are more than 1,400 of them in the United States.
