Thomson Reuters has brought on a significant group of people to bolster Reuters News, including some Wall Street Journal alums and notably, Jim Gaines, a longtime Time Inc. employee who most recently was managing editor at The Daily, News Corp.’s nascent tablet newspaper.
Gaines is the latest in a handful of editorial staffers who have left The Daily since it launched in February. He’ll be Reuters’ ethics, standards, and innovation editor.
The other big hire is Paul Ingrassia, a 31-year veteran of the Journal and a former president of Dow Jones Newswires. He was named deputy editor in chief, overseeing news content creation. Also joining Reuters is Stuart Karle, a former general counsel to the Journal who was fired by Rupert Murdoch. He'll be chief operating officer.
The appointments were made by newly named Reuters News editor in chief Stephen Adler, himself a veteran of the Journal. More recently, he was editor in chief of Businessweek before it was sold to Bloomberg LP.
The hires are part of Thomson Reuters’ efforts to make Reuters News, which it bought in 2008, more competitive with business-news rivals like Bloomberg and Dow Jones.
