New York Times' David Pogue Jumps to Yahoo

Tapped to lead major expansion of tech coverage

David Pogue is leaving The New York Times to lead a major expansion of Yahoo's consumer technology coverage.

Pogue has been a fixture in the consumer tech field for 25 years, most recently as a columnist for the Times. He’s also a best-selling how-to author and Emmy-winning correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning. His hire is another coup for Yahoo, which has enjoyed a string of positive press lately, and its second of late from the Times after Megan Liberman’s appointment as editor in chief.

In a blog post, Pogue acknowledged Yahoo is an "underdog" that he's given "a few swift kicks myself over the years." But he said that after spending time there over the past few months, he came to see it as "young, revitalized, aggressive." Pogue particularly praised CEO Marissa Mayer's leadership, pointing to Yahoo's traffic growth, site overhauls and willingness to experiment under her watch.

Mayer welcomed in Pogue in her own post, saying, “Yahoo is in a unique position to bring to life great editorial about the technology consumers are using every day. David is tremendously talented, has a great sense of humor, and is gifted at explaining technology.”
