Newspaper publisher and broadcaster Gannett said its chairman and CEO Craig Dubow stepped down due to health problems. A company spokesperson said Dubow suffered from "chronic issues related to prior medical conditions."
Gracia Martore, who has been serving as principal executive officer while Dubow was on medical leave, was named president and CEO, from president and COO. Martore joined Gannett in 1985 after 12 years in banking and served as its CFO before becoming COO. Meanwhile, board member Marjorie Magner was named non-executive chairman.
A 30-year vet of Gannett, Dubow aggressively cut headcount at its newspaper division as the newspaper industry struggled with deep declines in advertising revenue. Gannett publishes USA Today and 81 local newspapers.
As print revenue has plummeted, Dubow has tried to shift the focus away from print and reposition Gannett as a multiplatform publisher. In March, the company launched an expensive corporate branding campaign, aimed at showing the depth of Gannett’s digital content.
