Dr. Oz Magazine Loses Lead Designer Ahead of Launch

Title set to hit newsstands next week

Hearst’s newest magazine, Dr. Oz The Good Life, hasn’t put out its first issue, but it's already lost a key member of the launch team.

Cass Spencer, the design director, was let go Thursday, a few days ahead of the launch. Spencer, who lists work from another Hearst title, Cosmo for Latinas, as well as Rodale’s Prevention on his website, declined to go into specifics about his departure. A spokesperson for the magazine confirmed his edit, saying only by way of explanation, "When magazines are in start-up mode, changes occur." 

Hearst is set to launch the first test issue of the healthy lifestyle magazine on Feb. 4, with a second one slated to go out April 15. With 800,000 copies being distributed via newsstands and subscribers of other Hearst titles, the widely anticipated magazine could well be the biggest consumer magazine launch of the year. 

Like Food Network Magazine and HGTV Magazine, the two other fast-growing magazines Hearst has started with outside partners in recent years, the Dr. Oz title has a small launch staff. Its masthead lists 18 editorial people, including Oz, who is listed as founding editor; and his wife, Lisa Oz, who has the title of editor at large. There's no word yet on whether Spencer will be replaced.
