The Enemy Within

Howard Kurtz points this morning to a fascinating article in the New York Review of Books by Michael Massing. Entitled “The Press: The Enemy Within,” the article looks at some of the internal challenges facing the media–most interestingly the “powerful sedative” of appearing fair and balanced.

He points to Ken Silverstein, an investigative reporter in the Washington bureau of the Los Angeles Times who was tasked with uncovering voter fraud in Missouri. He found some. His editors boiled it down to equal spin between the Democrats and Republicans, making the story bland and burying the real news.
