Adios To Phyrne
The Reliable Source today closes out the story of Phryne, the National Press Club’s old nude painting. As Washingtonian laid out (scroll down) last fall, the painting, first posted in the club in 1932, has a long history and was removed in 1982 after objections from female members and has spent the last two decades floating around Washington and a stint at the Metropolitan Club. Last fall Phryne was to be auctioned off but it failed to draw a large enough (read six figure) bid.
Now Amy and Roxanne report that a deal was struck, and Phryne has been sold to an anonymous Brazilian buyer for $80,000, who will return it to the painter’s native Brazil–more than doubling the record for a work by Phryne’s artist Antonio Parreiras.
