Game developer Zynga and Facebook, once virtually intertwined, continue to drift further apart from each other, as Zynga announced in a post on its blog that while login with Facebook will still be an option for game players, it will no longer be a requirement starting next week.
In February 2012, Facebook’s S-1 filing revealed that Zynga accounted for 12 percent of Facebook’s revenue, but the two companies have been drifting apart since, with Zynga launching Zynga.com last March, enabling game players to access games via that website without being required to visit Facebook, and Facebook in turn making it easier for other developers to compete later in the year.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission last November, Zynga declared that it was no longer an extension of the Facebook platform, and that its games would be treated the same as applications from all other developers.
Zynga has fallen upon difficult times of late, announcing last month that it would close its studio in Baltimore and consolidate its offices in Texas and New York, which followed the shuttering of the developer’s operations in Japan last December, and its layoffs of more than 100 employees in Austin, Texas, and shutdown of its Boston studio last October.
Zynga wrote in its blog post:
Starting next week, when you visit Zynga.com, you will see a new streamlined signup that lets you create your own account just for playing games. We also wanted to make sure that existing Zynga.com players continue to have the best experience possible so you don’t have to start from scratch. All players will have the option to connect with Facebook and keep your game friends and game progress, while deciding what you share with your gaming community.
We thank you for the valuable feedback and hope you enjoy what we believe is a natural evolution of Zynga.com. We’ve kept a lot of the great features like live social stream, fast load, and online presence, which lets you see who else is playing right now. Some of your favorite games will be on the new site at launch, and we will continue to work hard to bring you more great games and new features over the coming weeks and months.
