YouTube Now Streaming Over 4 Billion Hours Of Video Every Month

How many minutes or hours worth of YouTube videos do you think you watch each month? According to the latest stats, the YouTube community is now watching a whopping 4 billion hours of YouTube videos per month.

How many minutes or hours worth of YouTube videos do you think you watch each month?  According to the latest stats, the YouTube community is now watching a whopping 4 billion hours of YouTube videos per month.

Sam Laird of Mashable breaks it down: “For those of you keeping score at home, that’s 456,000 years of cat videos, sports highlights, TED Talks and other content per month.  Or, the equivalent of watching the original Nyan Cat video about 66 billion times.”

It’s only been two months since YouTube announced, on their 7th birthday, that viewers were watching over 3 billion hours a month.  If viewership is up 1 billion hours a month in such a short period of time, imagine how many billions of hours viewers will be watching by the end of the year!

The new 4 billion hours a month statistic was originally reported last week by Amir Efrati of the Wall Street Journal.  YouTube exec Robery Kyncl revealed the new stat while speaking about the company’s new professional content channels initiative.  Mashable confirmed the stat yesterday with a YouTube spokesperson.

The YouTube Press Statistics page still says, “Over 3 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube.”  The site is likely to update the page soon and when they do, I wonder how many of the following stats will see surprising jumps as well:

  • 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube every month
  • 500 years of YouTube video are watched every day on Facebook
  • 700 YouTube videos are shared on Twitter each minute (up from 500 last month)
