Yelp today introduced food ordering and delivery from its website and said that it will roll out transactions between local businesses and the consumers that find them through Yelp across all types of businesses in the coming months.
The feature is live for about 100 San Francisco businesses, according to founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, who announced the feature today at a mobile conference in that city. By the end of the week, he said, the feature will work for thousands of businesses.
It builds on partnerships with Delivery.com and Eat24, which power to-go and delivery orders for restaurants.
Stoppelman said that consumers have a one-stop website for online purchases at Amazon.com, but they don’t have such a destination for connecting with local businesses. He hopes Yelp will be that site as the Platform feature rolls out to different types of businesses. For instance, Yelp will support appointment-booking for health and beauty businesses.
“As we continue to roll this feature out, Yelp Platform will eventually make it a whole lot easier to do everything from scheduling spa treatments and yoga sessions to making dentist appointments and purchasing services, directly through Yelp,” Stoppelman said in a press release.
Last month, Yelp introduced an advertising feature that allows businesses to host a transaction of their choosing on the site. Stoppelman indicated earlier in June that Yelp was looking at bringing more commerce onto its site.
Customers using the feature will store their payment information with Yelp.
“It’s very safe,” Stoppelman said.
Yelp draws 102 million monthly unique visitors, a quarter of which access the site on the mobile web. Its mobile apps have 10 million monthly active users, Stoppelman said. Overall, mobile users drive 50 percent of the review site’s search traffic.
Yelp will complete its acquisition of the European review site Qype by the end of 2013, Stoppelman said, importing the reviews there onto Yelp’s properties and leaving redirecting URLs in their place. Qype properties draw 15 million unique monthly visitors.
