“Twttr” first opened its doors as an employee-only platform on March 21, 2006, when co-founder Jack Dorsey famously wrote “just setting up my twttr”, the first-ever tweet.
The service launched to the public in July 2006, and later rebranded as “Twitter”. The first hashtag was used in August 2007, and the site passed one million users the following year.
In early 2010 Twitter was seeing 50 million tweets every day, which exploded to 140 million within 13 months. More than 200 million people were using the platform by the end of 2012, and 33,000 tweets per second were being pushed just weeks later.
In March of this year Ellen Degeneres’ selfie became the most retweeted tweet of all time, and Twitter now has more than 271 million active users who send more than one billion tweets every three days.
