Shery Lanford Smith, the chairwoman of the Sumter South Carolina Tea Party, is getting lots of flak for an off-color joke she posted on Facebook about the President and the First Lady.
The derogatory posting was made by Smith on her Facebook profile page last Thursday. And it included what viral marketers refer to as a call for action — she asked people to repost the joke.
Smith, who has been the Tea Party Sumter head since February of this year, claims that she is surprised by the backlash. She said that that joke has been in circulation for years, only referring to different politicans in the punchline.
That joke may have been in circulation offline, but online and on Facebook is another matter. When a political official posts it, and then asks everyone else to repost it, that elevates things.
Smith removed the offensive post after being called on it by the media. We’ve yet to learn whether she’s facing any additional heat from members of her political party.
