T-Mobile Data Revenue Jumps

T-Mobile USA added 670,000 net subscribers in the third quarter, FierceMobileContent reports, which is on pace with their second quarter results but about 22 percent behind their pace last year.

T-Mobile now has 32.1 million subscribers in the U.S., which is still firmly in fourth place among the four major carriers (the others are well over 50 million each).

Here’s the juicy, mobile-content-related part: “Service revenues increased 13 percent year-over-year to $4.9 billion, with data services revenue growing 28 percent over the previous year to $850 million,” the report said.

“Mobile messaging remains the predominant driver of data ARPU: T-Mobile USA subscribers sent or received almost 49 billion messages in the third quarter of 2008, compared to 41 billion in the second quarter of 2008 and 21 billion in the third quarter of 2007.” Not bad for a company that is just now getting around to switching on its 3G data network, several years after its competitors did the same.
