CNN blogger Amy Gahran thinks they should. Pointing out that eBook sales are rising and Amazon has a strong position in the market, which is poised to grow significantly in the coming years, Gahran argues that Amazon would do well to make it as easy as possible to own a Kindle.
Here is more from CNN.com: “Last year, nearly $1 billion in e-books were sold, according to Forrester. By 2015, this is expected to jump to $3 billion. That’s an awful lot of money to be made selling e-books. At that point, selling e-readers at any price might just become an obstacle to selling more e-books. So why not just give away some e-readers for free?”
This is not entirely a bad idea. As Gahran points out, Kindle dominates the market with 47% market share, followed by Apple who has 32% of the eReader market cornered. With Apple creating new rules for in app purchasing, they are causing a lot of problems for Amazon. It may be easier to give away free eReaders than to relaunch their app.
What do you think of this idea?
