VentureBeat reports on a Netflix instant streaming capability that Qualcomm announced is supported by the generation of 2.5GHz Snapdragon processors that will be used in future Android phones. Qualcomm noted that Netflix itself certified that their newest processors can deal efficiently with Netflix video to provide instant streaming.
This sounds great and I’m looking forward to seeing Netflix instant streaming on some future Android phone of mine. There is just one little issue: Netflix does not have an app that works on Android phones. Netflix’ Greg Peters explained the issues in this November 12, 2010 blog post.
The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android.
Netflix obviously wants to be on the best selling Android platform. And, presumably, this Qualcomm announcement is an indication that Netflix is close to releasing an app for Android. But, this has not happened yet.
