18% Of Consumers Watch Online Content Daily…On Their TV Sets

How do you access your online content? If you’re like the overwhelming majority of people you watch online videos and other content on your laptop, desktop, smart phone or tablet. However, a new study reveals that more and more people are watching online content on their television sets.

NPD DisplaySearch reports, “18% of consumers surveyed in 14 regions are accessing online content daily on their TV sets.”  NPD DisplaySearch Research Director of Consumer Insights, Riddhi Patel, explains, “Online content is mostly viewed on computers or mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones, but TVs are increasingly becoming devices of choice for consumers, particularly since an increasing numbers of sets have either built-in connectivity or can be connected to the internet via a peripheral device such as a connected Blu-ray layer or set top box, among others.”  He added, “In fact, 25% of consumers surveyed said they view online content on their TV several times a week.”

The study is based on a sampling of consumers in Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, India, China, Turkey, Russia, the UK, Italy, Germany, France, the US and Japan.

So what are people watching?  According to the study, the most popular source of Internet content is actually not the content that originated on the Internet—it’s movies.  “Consumers prefer to watch movies in a social setting, and since movies are available via online sites, they have become the most preferred content.”  Broadcast content is also popular, but it looks like cat videos and other “made for ‘teh interwebz’” content has yet to take off on television sets.  When it comes to the online content that people are choosing to watch on their televisions, it looks like they’re sticking to the same sort of content they’ve watched on their televisions all along.

Patel says, “Although results differ by country, the results imply there is still a general lack of interest in viewing online content via TV.  This can be attributed to usage of devices other than TVs to view online content as well as a lack of infrastructure and/or expertise to connect their existing TVs to the internet.”  30% of those surveyed who do not view online content on their televisions reported that the reason was that they simply do not own the necessary devices.  44% reported that they simply have no interest.
