The New York Times’ Washington bureau chief and political editor Carolyn Ryan and national editor Alison Mitchell announced to staff today that national correspondent for the Mid-Atlantic region Trip Gabriel will join the outlet’s political team and that Jennifer Steinhauer has been promoted to Mid-Atlantic bureau chief.
“What Trip loves, more than anything, is politics. And he writes about it beautifully, from Eric Cantor’s collapse to Governor McDonnell’s family bribery scandal,” wrote Ryan and Mitchell in an email to staff. “That’s why we are delighted that Trip is joining the political team, which was his home during the 2012 presidential cycle and will be again for 2016. We will turn to Trip as the race for the White House gets underway.”
Steinhauer has covered Congress for the Times for the past four years, and prior to that served as its Los Angeles bureau chief.
