Joel Siegel: 1944-2007

Film critic Joel Siegel passed away on Friday after a long struggle with colon cancer. Siegel was 63 and an almost perpetual presence on Good Morning America and WABC’s Eyewitness News — not to mention a smiling face at Lunch at Michael’s. Despite his illness, Siegel kept on at his television work until only two weeks before his death. Over at the Chicago Sun-Times, fellow critic Roger Ebert‘s tribute highlighted something we never knew before: One of Siegel’s first jobs was as a joke writer for Robert Kennedy.

Harry Shearer gives his own tribute to the lesser-known, “pre-moustache” Joel.
