Celebrated writer and director J.J. Abrams answered fan questions at Quora on Monday. The Q&A was staged to promote the DVD release of Super 8.

Quora is a high-ranking user generated database of information coming from individual questions and answers. The platform is structured in a way that limits your ability to ask someone, like Abram, just about anything – it needs to be information based. A question like “Can you hire me for your next movie?” wouldn’t work. A question like, “How did J.J. Abrams get started making movies? “ would work because it was posted to the Abram’s Q&A. The whole idea of creating an information based question is to provide information to readers.

Are any of the characters in Super 8 based on JJ Abrams as a young filmmaker?

Abrams: The chubby director was partially me, because I was a chubby director. But I relate most to the main kid, sort of because of the way he interacts with the world. That is to say, he’s sort of an outsider. Not an athlete, not wildly confident. A romantic, but unable to act on it. I felt a lot like that when I was a kid.

How did JJ Abrams get started making movies?

Abrams: I started making super 8 movies after my grandfather took me to the Universal Studios tour. My mind was blown wide open. All I knew was, my dad had a camera at home and I was gonna start making incredible movies. Which, to this day, I have yet to do.
