Did you know that two children are sold every minute? Child sex slavery and exploitation is a serious problem, and one that a lot of people are completely unaware of. But a powerful new interactive YouTube campaign is trying to change all that.
‘Sharon’s SALE!’ is disguised as a simple sale video, in which an 8-year old girl is selling all of the toys that she doesn’t need anymore. The video is even hosted on a fake YouTube channel belonging to an 8-year old girl. But the message of the sale video is much more adult. Check it out below, and then read on to find out more about the campaign and who is behind it.
As you probably noticed in the video above, the prices of all of Sharon’s toys are annotated and pop up when you scroll over them. Mr. Potato Head is $5.50; the toy car is $5.00; the Rubik’s cube is $3.00. But when you scroll over Sharon you see that she’s got a price as well. When you click on Sharon’s price annotation you are directed to a video about Love146, an organization with a goal of abolishing child sex slavery and exploitation.
The video was created by Orel Bitan, a copywriter at BBDO Israel, and her friend Jessica Kalbermann. Though Orel works at BBDO, she told me by email that the video was created entirely independently. It was an entry into the YouTube Good Work contest, just like the OCD and Music Education campaigns we’ve covered recently.
In addition to a positive response on YouTube, with comments like “When I clicked on the girl and got to the other video I was shocked! Powerful!”, it has also been featured on channel 10 news in Israel. Although voting for the YouTube Good Work contest is closed, Orel will continue to promote the issue, she told me via email.
