Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have changed the way that businesses of all shapes and sizes in essentially every major industry around the world brand and market their products and services, but this relatively new medium wouldn’t even exist without the range of innovative technology in online collaboration that has evolved over the years.

Indeed, it’s been a stepping stone process, from the first terminals and bulletin board systems of the 1960s and 1970s, through to the mainstream availability of email, the world wide web and instant messaging in the 1990s, and the launch of MySpace and peer-to-peer sharing over the last decade or so.

From here, it was a relatively short leap to modern social networking, smartphones and cloud computing.
