Government Greenlights SMS for Emergencies

The US government has given approval for a nationwide system that delivers emergency alerts via text messages. According to the AP, mobile operators won’t have to participate in the system, but they have been strong supporters of the plan. Consumers will also have the ability to opt out of receiving the text alerts.

According to the article, the system will deliver three types of alerts – national alerts, imminent threats and child abduction emergencies – with each type having its own sound or vibration.
