Google has announced the launch of a Zagat revival across the web and mobile, including a new Zagat website and apps on iOS and Android. The new Zagat features ratings and reviews of restaurants and nightlife hotspots, available for free for the first time, with no registration required. The platform features news and video content, as well as curated lists (“Top 10 Restaurants,” for instance), map-based browsing and search tools.

At launch, the new Zagat contains restaurant and nightlife information for nine major cities: Chicago, Austin, Boston, London, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
Google plans to expand this to 50 U.S. and international locations in the coming months. In addition, there are plans to expand Zagat from a restaurant / nightlife focused platform to one that includes information about hotels, shopping outlets and other “places of interest.”
The new Zagat finds itself up against some steep competition from the likes of Yelp, Urbanspoon and even Google’s own Google Places, which often has the first reviews that appear when searching for a business on Google. Regardless of the challenges, Google and Zagat hope the legacy of the Zagat name will be enough to encourage users to try this new version.
