In an effort to quell user confusion, Facebook’s service that allows users to see updates from other users who they are not friends with will now be referred to as “follow,” rather than “subscribe.”
Facebook said the functionality would still be the same, adding in a statement:
We found it is a term that resonates better with people using the service.
Despite the obvious comparison to Twitter’s staple feature, the renaming fits with Facebook’s pattern of simplifying the naming of its features, with Mashable pointing out that the term “subscribe” may have been interpreted by some users to involve payment, and TechCrunch offering the example of the social network’s change of “become a fan” to “like.”
