I had a very pleasant surprise this past Saturday evening – The long awaited Android OS 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) update was finally available for my Nexus One. This update had been promised as “ready in a few weeks” way back in December. Weeks turned into months but it is finally here. You can see the entire OTA (Over The Air) update process in the series of screen photos below.
The update took quite a while to download and install the 43.6MB installation file. My Nexus One rebooted three times during the update process before finally settling in to the new flatter (and in my opinion “better”) graphical user interface look.
The Nexus One seems a bit faster (more responsive) after the update to Gingerbread. However, there were a few casualties.
1. The Weather Channel’s widget does not work
2. Google’s own News & Weather widget’s weather component does not work either.
Note that the apps themselves appear to work. The problems lie solely in the widget components.
