Here’s something we never thought we’d see – Web sites that have some sort of illegal practice going on. OK, well, maybe that’s not so shocking, but when you’re talking about the vast majority of ringtone Web sites in the European Union, that is a surprise.
The EU investigated more than 550 sites selling mobile content in its 27 member states plus Norway and Iceland. According to Cellular-news, 80% of them are facing further investigation because they’re suspected of breaking EU consumer rules.
Potential infractions include confusing price information (not including taxes, tricking folks into signing up for a subscription), lack of contact information for the site operator and hiding important info in the tiny text that no one reads.
The complete list of Web sites under further investigation and full details of the sweep are posted on the EU Web site.
