Essence Communications Inc. has gotten itself a good deal in its latest hire: Celeste Harwell, who has done directorial sales work for The New York Times, Marie Claire, and TRACE magazine has been taken on as the African-American media company’s newest director of fashion. Harwell’s most recent gig was serving as the Associate Publisher for TIME Style & Design, which has ties to Essence.
Says Essence president Michelle Ebanks, “I am certain that Celeste will successfully break new ground in establishing relationships and developing innovative ideas, especially in our pivotal 40th anniversary year!”

ESSENCE NAMES CELESTE T. HARWELL DIRECTOR OF FASHION
(New York, NY â€“ February 18, 2010) â€“ Essence Communications has named Celeste T. Harwell to the position of Director of Fashion for ESSENCE, it was announced today by Essence Communications, Inc. president, Michelle Ebanks. Harwell will report to ESSENCE National Sales Director, Colin Mitchell and will be responsible for driving advertising revenue and developing promotional partnerships within the fashion industry.
Previously, Harwell served as the Associate Publisher for TIME Style & Design, a sister company of Essence Communications, where she was responsible for increasing ad revenue and developing marketing programs for international and domestic luxury fashion advertisers; generating $3 million in new business revenue in five years.

Harwell is a seasoned saleswoman with previous experience as the publisher of TRACE magazine, a high-end urban music, fashion and lifestyle magazine. There, she was solely responsible for developing and implementing a strategic sales and marketing strategy for the re-launch of the magazine. Prior to this Harwell wielded her expertise at other publishing and media houses, most notably Marie Claire, where she served as the American Fashion and Retail Director and The New York Times, where in a span of several years she worked her way up from The New York Times 7T Training Program to the Group Director of Department Stores, Fashion & Jewelry and Mass Market.
Harwell graduated from Canisius College with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. She resides in New York City.
