Brian Williams ‘Officially’ Gone from NBC News

Brian Williams still getting punished...as he goes to MSNBC.

NBC News Nightly News Anchor and major domo Brian Williams was suspended for six months without pay in February following a few (major) embellishments regarding his life experiences.

Contrary to what Williams may have believed, NBC News moved on along with its viewers and the larger world of journalism.

Those six months are up in August.

According to a story from CNN Money and various rumors around the media, Williams will not be coming back to the hallowed news desk of the Peacock; NBC News will keep Lester Holt at the desk, much to Williams’ chagrin. So, what’s a guy to do?

He will be the face of MSNBC,” handling big breaking news stories, one of the people said on condition of anonymity. Williams may have other responsibilities as well. Details are still scarce and subject to change. “No one knows anything,” one anchor at the network complained Wednesday.

Given the fact that MSNBC has been struggling in the ratings and that Williams was recently and publicly disgraced, we have to question the wisdom of this (alleged) decision. It’s also odd for an independent newsman to join what is essentially a partisan network.

After CNNMoney reported on Wednesday evening that NBC had made the decision to bring Williams back, The New York Times described his expected new role on cable.

Williams is a fit for MSNBC, the Times said, because “in the coming months, MSNBC is expected to introduce more hard news and reporting from NBC News journalists during daytime hours, which would be something of a break from its more opinion-based programming.”

Williams as the face of a network trying to improve its reputation? Worse things could happen…but we’re not quite sure what they might be at the moment.
