Apple Overtook RIM to Take #2 Smartphone Spot in Q3 2011. Nokia Still Far Ahead at #1

GigaOm repoted that:

Apple Passes RIM in Global Smartphone Share

This was for the third quarter of 2010 when RIM shipped 12.3 million BlackBerry units while Apple shipped 15.4 million iPhone units. Apple released the iPhone 4 in this quarter which helped it leapfrog RIM for the first time. Nokia, meanwhile, shipped an enormouns 26.5 million units of their various smartphones during the same period.

I suspect we will see RIM and Apple seesaw between second and third place for the next three reported quarters.
