On June 16, 2011, Paris-based tattoo artist Karl Marc realized the world’s first animated tattoo. A video of the animated tattoo, created as part of Ballantine’s Human API campaign on Facebook, is currently climbing the viral charts and is a must-see for lovers of tattoos, animation, and social media alike.
Ballantine’s Scotch Whiskey released the video as a part of their social campaign Human API, which is designed to celebrate people that “leave an impression.” They are livestreaming video of tattoo artists, graffiti artists, ice sculptors and other people who leave a physical mark on people, objects and the world through a system they are calling their “Human API”, which lets Facebookers share thoughts, ask questions and chat with the artists live, to help them with their creative decisions.
Ballantine’s latest Human API video, which hit YouTube on July 4, has been the most popular so far and has already drawn more than 50,000 views. It was featured on YouTube Trends and is continuing to climb the charts. It shows Karl Marc tattooing someone, from his own perspective. But the coolest part comes at the end. Part of the tattoo is a QR code that, when scanned with a smartphone, opens up a YouTube video that matches up with the tattoo for an amazing animated effect.
