Have you been following all the rumors on the mythical Amazon tablet? One analyst with Piper Jaffrey is taking them a little too seriously.
Gene Munster believes Amazon could sell over 2 million units in 2012, following a late 2011 launch in time for the holidays. He’s basing his guess on the recent wild speculation by Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin, who read his tea leaves and predicted that Amazon is aiming to release at least one tablet in time for the holiday 2011 season.
According to a research note Munster wrote on May 27: “Our overall Kindle sales (tablets and traditional Kindles) currently account for 3 percent of overall Amazon sales, but would account for 4 percent of revenue in 2012 if the tablet is a reality.”
Munster also predicted that Amazon will sell nearly 14 million Kindles in 2012, which is up from his estimate of 7.3 million in 2011, but down from his current wild guess of 15 million units.
