99% of Amherst Freshmen Connected on Facebook Before Classes Started

While most people familiar with Facebook have known stats like this to be anecdotally true for at least the last couple of years, a new report from Peter Schilling, the Director of IT at Amherst College, confirms the case:

Out of 438 students who enrolled at Amherst this fall, 432 had joined the Amherst College Class of 2012 Facebook group by the end of August (classes started the first week of September). Additionally, Schilling says 3,225 posts were made in the group by that time.

Clearly, Facebook is becoming a predominant communication platform for a lot of folks. Or as one student told me recently, “Email is for old people.”
