Most "surprise ending/unexpected twist" ads fall flat because they're too obvious, all buildup with a crappy payoff or simply toss in a curve without thought for the brand message. Some do all of those things. This Volkswagen spot from ad shop Try in Norway, with an apparently cuckolded husband writing a letter recounting the evidence of his wife's dalliances, is an entertaining exception. The storytelling is strong, the voiceover is spot-on, and the actors' facial expressions are consistently amusing. The final twist humorously captures male psychology, particularly as it relates to cars, in a refreshingly surprising way. Cuckolded. It's a fancy word, and I'm glad I was able to use it today to describe someone other than myself. Thanks, VW!
