An Orchestra of Audi Engines Performs Classic TV Theme Songs for the Emmys

Taking Star Trek, Cheers and Mary Tyler Moore for a spin

Ever wonder how iconic TV theme songs would sound with brand-new Audi vehicles revving their engines in time to the beat?

Well, now we know, thanks to these ads from Venables Bell & Partners touting the automaker’s sponsorship of the 69th Emmy Awards extravaganza, which airs this Sunday on CBS.

In this spot, the Audi R8 V10 Plus, TT RS and SQ5 models join classical musicians for an otherworldly take on the Star Trek theme. Logical, Captain? Judge for yourself:

“We hope our viewers will enjoy this creative approach to celebrating progress in performance,” Audi of America marketing vp Loren Angelo tells AdFreak.

Next, the cars pay homage to a place where everybody knows your name:

“We enlisted a composer and sound engineer to take the sound from a physical engine to the completed track,” Angelo says. “Audi tracked the car revving the engine in neutral and held the engine at the appropriate RPM to give us a steady note. After that, we tracked [the reverberations] rising to that note, and falling off of it.”

Can the Audi orchestra take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile? Let’s find out in the final spot below (which, if nothing else, packs plenty of spunk):

“We explored a variety of popular programs and car-centric hits from the past,” Angelo says of the song selection. “These three shows hit just the right tone of comedy, tribute and drama.”

Alas, there’s no gear-grrrrinding take on the theme from Knight Rider. “There’s always next year’s campaign,” Angelo says.

We’ll stock up on earplugs. By then, a slate of all-new models should be primed for a tune-up.
