Mary Carpenter is the new president of PHD Midwest, moving to the Omnicom media network from WPP's Mindshare where she was managing partner of performance marketing.
The appointment follows PHD's win of global media planning business for Racine, Wisc.-based S.C. Johnson last month. That business will be handled out of PHD Chicago, where Carpenter will be based. Other marketers working with PHD in Chicago include Kohler, HP and Hormel Foods.
Carpenter's title is new and part of PHD U.S. chief Nathan Brown's executive reorganization around regions and practices in the states. As part of that effort, Carpenter joins Briony McCarthy, president of PHD NY; Anne Marie Schaeffer, president of PHD West Coast; and Star Kalatzan, president of the healthcare practice. Those other appointments were promotions made from within PHD.
The most recent head of the Chicago office was Chris Whalen, who held the title of managing director before moving to PHD corporate sibling OMD as a global account director and then on to Kimberly-Clark as global media director last fall.
In Carpenter's most recent role at Mindshare, she oversaw the agency's performance practice across all North American clients and offices while leading growth initiatives for acquisition marketing, direct response and digital commerce. Before taking on that job, she managed Mindshare's 150-person Chicago office.
Before joining Mindshare in 2012, Carpenter spent more than a decade at Starcom Mediavest Group where she was managing director of the agency's SMG Performance Marketing. She also served in senior account roles at Starcom USA and GM Planworks.
