Google’s biggest challenge, it would seem, is hoarding engineers and other techies. The company has taken some pretty extreme approaches to finding them, including putting up billboards in Silicon Valley daring them to solve complex mathematical equations. Now, it’s decided to fish where the fish are: It’s going to the Star Trek convention starting today in Vegas in search of nerds. There’s even a Web site encouraging Trekkies to use Google developer tools to create sci-fi overlays on maps, which sounds like a grand old time. Google has set up a booth at the convention where Trek fans can find out more about lifeforms in the Googleplex. Its algorithms have found a positive correlation between top-notch programming talent and the tendency to dress like Spock.
