Au revoir, really loud commercials

Dolbylogo Tell me this isn’t a moment we’ve all been waiting for: At this week’s mega International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Dolby is showing off a new technology called Dolby Volume that is supposed to level out the audio output from your TV set, especially (well, it’s implied at least) those super-loud commercials. According to this release, the technology, which will be coming soon to a new TV near you, “models how humans perceive audio to finally eliminate variable loudness when changing channels or programs, without disruptive audio artifacts.” The Wall Street Journal has a free story on how all this is meant to work here, but as long as it really works, who really cares about how it works?
