Cincinnati ABC affiliate WCPO has responded to an incident involving chief meteorologist Steve Raleigh‘s son Carter, after he was involved in a crash that turned into an assault on June 22.
Carter Raleigh was named as a motorist involved in a crash with 79-year-old Douglas Nathaniel Morrow in the parking lot of a local restaurant called Montgomery Inn The Boathouse, according to a Cincinnati Police Department.
Cincinnati’s City Beat also said users on social media, including a local attorney, allege that one of the men in the video appears to be Steve Raleigh.
On July 10, Stacie Morrow-Stickrod posted an update about the incident on Facebook. According to Morrow-Stickrod’s post, her father, Morrow, as well as her 76-year-old mother and brother were attacked following the traffic incident.
In her post, Morrow-Stickrod said her father called police because “he suspected [the suspects] had been drinking (because of the smell of alcohol).” She said this angered the suspects, who began attacking the family.
According to Cincinnati media writer John Kiesewetter, the police report said that the “suspect approached Victim #1 striking him with a closed fist in the head knocking him to the ground causing listed injuries. Victim #2 and Victim #3 while attempting to aid Victim #1 was struck and shoved to the ground by the suspect causing listed injuries.”
In response, Jeff Brogan, WCPO vice president and general manager, released a statement on July 12:
“We are aware of the incident involving Steve Raleigh’s family. It is still under investigation, and at this time no charges have been filed against anyone. Steve shared his side of the incident with our leadership. His account is consistent with the police report, which does not name him, and with what we have reviewed on video. The video does not show the incident from start to finish. We will continue to monitor official findings.”
Morrow-Stickrod said her mother suffered a concussion, fractured skull, brain bleed, a contusion on the back of her head and cuts and bruises to her arms and legs. Her father also suffered a concussion.
“These were locally famous people and in my opinion believe they are above the law,” Morrow-Stickrod said. “I feel like there has been so much time that has past [sic] with no arrest made and continuing to watch my mom struggle is hard to swallow.”
According to CPD Lt. Jonathan Cunningham, the incident is still under investigation.
“It was a traffic crash which turned into an assault, which turned into our officers being called,” he told CityBeat. “At this point, our investigators are working through the case.”
On Saturday, Cincinnati native and former Boston Red Sox player Kevin Youkilis posted on Facebook that he appears in the video. He said he got involved because he saw “a group of people jawing at each other in the parking lot,” including some in Red Sox gear, and he tried to diffuse the situation.
“Unfortunately I was a little too late and saw a horrible chain of events unfold. My intention after what I witnessed was to help the two individuals on the ground and to protect anyone else from being harmed,” said Youkilis, a Red Sox TV broadcaster.
