What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
I get up and look at my emails, and then from there, I check Twitter. I follow different media and sports sources. Especially right now, with the show premiering, I want to see where the press is landing.
Who do you follow from the sports world?
I’m a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan. And it seems like the entire Steelers team are fans of True Blood, so I’ve gotten to know them from going back during games. Twitter’s a fun way to give each other shout-outs during the year.
What occupies your mind in the car?
I’m in the habit of making mixes, so I’m always driving around and trying to make sure that all the songs are flowing right and in the right order. I’m a closet DJ—I used to burn CDs for my friends back in the day, and everybody started bugging me about, “When’s your next mix coming out?”
What have you been listening to lately?
My favorite band of the last year is Poliça, a band from Minnesota. They sound like they’re Icelandic. Really amazing. I like the stuff that Nero is putting out, and I’m obsessed with Die Antwoord, a South African rap group.
Are you a TV junkie?
My go-to shows are True Blood—I really love watching it because there are so many plotlines and so many characters that I actually get to be a fan and watch what everybody else is doing—and Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead. And I am a football junkie, so during football season, I’ve got ESPN on all day, every day. Unless the Steelers lose, in which case I stay away.
Give us the skinny on your favorite app.
It was just brought to my attention that one of my cast mates on True Blood [John Rezig, who plays Kevin Ellis] created an app for his site, The Chive. It’s a fun, random entertainment site. I’ve actually been looking around at a lot of apps because in December when my fitness book launches, we’re going to launch a website and an app along with it. It will be an online community where you can find out what to do at the gym, log your workouts or just talk about which supplements work or what the best jump ropes and protein powders are. It will strip down all the BS of the fitness world.
What’s your biggest digital indulgence?
Music. I buy it all online, so I have a healthy iTunes store balance. I’m always hanging out with my DJ friends, getting introduced to new sounds and then going home and spending gross amounts of money downloading it all.
With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?
I’ve taken it into my own hands. In terms of fitness especially, there’s a lot of misinformation online and in print. But rather than complaining about it, I’m trying to put something into the universe that’s actually the truth.
