Today, Showtime was literally up to bat at the Television Critics Association’s winter press meeting.
Showtime will introduce a new series in 2011 chronicling the competitive world of professional baseball. Still untitled, this collaboration between Showtime and Major League Baseball Productions will focus on a baseball team’s task of defending its World Series title through the 2011 MLB season. It will preview at the opening of the new baseball season, followed by regularly scheduled episodes during the second half of the season.
“This new series is one I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember,” said David Nevins, president of entertainment at Showtime Networks. “Having produced Friday Night Lights, I’ve received numerous pitches over the years for scripted shows about the world of professional sports, but nothing can capture the drama and intensity of the real thing.”
Also at Showtime, the cable net has renewed sitcom Californication for a fifth season, with the first of 12 new episodes to begin production this spring. The third seasons of Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara, meanwhile, will begin on Monday, March 28 in the 10 p.m. hour. And The Borgias, featuring Oscar winner Jeremy Irons as the patriarch of one of history’s most notorious families, launches on Sunday, April 3 from 9-11 p.m.
